This settlement is a continuation of Juul Labs’ progress to resolve issues from the past. We applaud the Attorney General’s plan to deploy resources to address underage use in the state of Iowa, including funding the adoption of technologies like electronic ID scanning at retail to improve age-verification compliance and supporting much-needed enforcement against illegally-marketed disposable and synthetic-nicotine products.
We also support the Attorney General’s balanced approach on vapor products, implementing interventions to mitigate underage use while recognizing their harm-reduction potential among adult smokers who transition away from combustible cigarettes. The terms of the agreement are aligned with our current business practices, which we implemented as part of our company-wide reset.
Over the past year, Juul Labs also has settled with 39 states and territories as well as more than 5,000 cases brought by approximately 10,000 plaintiffs. We remain in ongoing discussions with other key stakeholders to resolve the remaining litigation
These settlements represent major steps toward strengthening Juul Labs’ operations and securing the company’s path forward to fulfill its mission to transition adult smokers away from combustible cigarettes while combating underage use.
As we work through the FDA’s administrative appeals process of its now-stayed MDO and our products remain available for adult smokers, we are confident in our ability to advance the harm reduction opportunity in the United States.
